They’re not suitable for everyone—especially those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking certain medications like oral contraceptives or HRT, which may be less effective when combined with these jabs.
Eligibility for weight loss injections in the UK depends on several medical criteria, and access varies depending on whether you’re going through the NHS or a private provider.
To qualify for weight loss injections like Mounjaro (tirzepatide) or Wegovy (semaglutide) on the NHS, you typically need to meet all of the following:
BMI of 35 or higher, or 30+ with a weight-related health condition (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea).
Previous attempts at weight loss through diet and exercise that haven’t been successful.
Referral to a specialist weight management service, such as a Tier 3 clinic or a GP-led programme.
For Mounjaro specifically, the NHS is rolling it out in phases, starting with those who have the highest clinical need—for example, a BMI of 40+ and multiple health conditions.
