Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

Skin Rejuvenation (ESR) using Intense Pulse Light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, also known as a photofacial, is a non-surgical method to improve the color and texture of your skin. It specifically targets visible damage caused by sun exposure, a phenomenon known as photoaging.  This damage is mainly on areas like your face, neck, hands, or chest.

How does an IPL treatment work:

Light Energy Targeting:

  • IPL uses light energy to target specific colours in your skin.
  • When the skin absorbs this light and heats up, unwanted cells are eliminated.
  • This process can address various skin conditions simultaneously.

Conditions that can be treated by IPL:

IPL is most effective for individuals with pale or light brown skin.

It can help with:

  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch marks
  • Liver or age spots
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Brown spots (also called liver or age spots)
  • Dark spots from hormonal changes
  • Discoloured skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Redness from rosacea
  • Scars
  • Spider veins
  • Unwanted hair

Who Shouldn’t Get IPL Treatment?:

  • If you are pregnant, have a skin condition, or currently have a sunburn, consult your doctor/nurse before undergoing IPL treatment.
  • Additionally, if you take medication for other conditions (such as blood thinners or the acne drug isotretinoin, commonly known as Accutane), discuss it with your healthcare provider.

What should I expect post-treatment?

Immediately following the procedure, you may experience some redness, swelling and/or a slight darkening of pigmented areas. The redness and swelling usually lasts a couple of days however the darkened pigmentation may persist and flake off for up to two weeks after treatment. Make up can be applied immediately after treatment if necessary. It is extremely important to apply moisturiser and sunblock and avoid sun exposure as much as possible to avoid additional sun damage.

When will I see results?

The effects of IPL are cumulative. After the first treatment you will see improvements within a few days to a couple of weeks. For wrinkle reduction and skin toning, results can take longer (1 – 3 months).

Each subsequent treatment will bring subtle changes until you achieve optimum improvement.

The number of IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment sessions required can vary based on individual factors and the specific skin condition being addressed. However, here are some general guidelines:

Skin Concerns and Goals:

  • Mild Sun Damage or Redness: Typically, 3 to 5 sessions may be sufficient for noticeable improvement.
  • Pigmentation Issues (Age Spots, Freckles): You might need 3 to 6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart.
  • Rosacea or Broken Blood Vessels: Around 3 to 6 sessions are often recommended.

Frequency:

  • Sessions are usually scheduled every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • The exact interval depends on the area being treated and your skin’s response.

Maintenance:

  • After the initial series of treatments, maintenance sessions (usually once every 6 to 12 months) help maintain results.
  • Regular sun protection and skincare are essential to prolong the benefits.

Individual responses can vary, so it’s essential to have realistic expectations and follow the recommended treatment schedule. Always prioritise safety and seek professional advice for the best outcomes .
