What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition that is  characterised by excessive sweating that goes beyond what is necessary in order to regulate body temperature.

While sweating is normal during eposides physical activity or when it’s hot, hyperhidrosis causes individuals to sweat excessively even when their body doesn’t need to cool down. 

Types of Hyperhidrosis:

  • Primary Hyperhidrosis: There is no specific cause that can be  identified. This often affects localised areas such as the hands, armpits, or face.
  • Secondary Hyperhidrosis: is linked to an underlying condition or medications.

Common Symptoms:

  • Wet Palms (Hands): Excessive sweating occuring in the palms.
  • Wet Soles (Feet): Abnormal sweating that occurs on the soles of the feet.
  • Frequent Sweating: Persistent sweating even without any physical exertion.
  • Sweating That Soaks Through Clothing.

Possible Causes of hyperhydrosis:

  • Hereditary Factors: Some cases may be genetically predisposed.
  • Medical Conditions: Some conditions such as diabetesmenopausethyroid problems, and also certain types of cancer may contribute.
  • Side Effects of Medications.

Complications:

  • Infections: Individuals with hyperhidrosis are more prone to suffering from skin infections.
  • Social and Emotional Effects: Excessive sweating can be embarrassing and often affects quality of life.

Treatment Options:

  • Self-Care Measures:
    • Bathing daily helps to reduce bacteria on the body.
    • Changing socks frequently.
    • Engaging in relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation.
  • Medications:
    • Antiperspirants these are stronger than regular deodorants.
    • Prescription creams (e.g., eflornithine) this helps to decrease sweating.
    • Antidepressants this is in order to manage anxiety, which can often  worsen in individuals suffering from hyperhidrosis).
    • Botulinum toxin A (Prescription only) injections are used to block the nerves that cause the excessive sweating. (Needs to be administered by a Healthcare Professional)
  • Longer-Lasting Treatment options:
    • Electrolysis: Stops hair growth by using an electric current.
    • Laser hair removal/ Intense Pulse Light: These may not be permanent but offers longer-lasting results.
