Wrinkles and Skin Laxity

What is Skin Laxity?

Skin laxity is a natural part of the aging process. As time goes by, your skin undergoes changes that lead to a loss of firmness and structure.

  1. Collagen: Collagen is a crucial protein required for maintaining skin elasticity, healthy bones, joints, and organs. It constitutes about 30% of the protein in your body. Unfortunately, collagen production decreases as you age, affecting your overall skin quality.
  2. Elastin: Elastin is another essential component, this provides your skin with its youthful bounce and healthy appearance. Like collagen, elastin also diminishes naturally over time, contributing to skin laxity.

Some factors that contribute to skin laxity are:

  • Sun Exposure – The Sun’s ultra violet rays penetrate the skin and damage the fibres that keep the skin firm. Sun exposure is also responsible for forming sun spots, pigmentation and help wrinkles to appear. Sun beds are equally as damaging for the skin.
  • Weight Fluctuations – If you Yo-Yo diet or have large swings in weight gain/loss, it causes the skin on the face to stretch and contact. After the age of 35, our skin is less elastic, and the contraction is no longer as effective as it once was.
  • Loss of Volume in the face – As we age, we begin to lose volume in our cheeks due to less collagen stimulation. Gravity pulls the mid-section of the face down and you may begin to see lines and folds appearing around the Nasolabial area and around the jowls and marionette lines.
  • Loss of Collagen – Over time, our skin loses its elasticity and collagen. This causes it to become loose and less successful at hiding what is happening underneath. Age causes the skin to become more delicate and prone to stretching without the ability to spring back.

Prevention and Treatment:

  • Exercise: Regular exercise, especially muscle-building activities, provides support for the skin.
  • Skincare Products: Look for products containing retinoids, which stimulate collagen and elastin production.
  • Collagen Supplements: Consider taking collagen supplements to support skin health.

When it comes to treating wrinkles and skin laxity, there are a wide varity of options available.

Non-Invasive Treatments:

  • Dermal Fillers: These are injectables that can help restore volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve skin texture. They work by replenishing lost volume and stimulating collagen production.
  • Laser Resurfacing: Laser treatments can target wrinkles, fine lines, and skin laxity. They promote collagen production and improve skin texture.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy: RF devices deliver controlled heat to the skin, this stimulates collagen and elastin production. This tightens the skin and helps reduces wrinkles.
  • Ultrasound Therapy: Ultrasound waves penetrate deep into the skin, promoting collagen regeneration and tightening loose skin.
  • Chemical Peels: These exfoliate the skin, improve texture, and reduce fine lines.
  • Microneedling: Tiny needles create micro-injuries, triggering collagen production and improving skin laxity.

Minimally Invasive Procedures:

  • Thread Lifts: Threads are inserted under the skin to lift and tighten sagging areas.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): PRP injections use your own blood to stimulate collagen and to  rejuvenate the skin.
  • Microfocused Ultrasound (MFU): Similar to ultrasound therapy, MFU targets deeper layers of skin for tightening.
  • Neuromodulators (e.g., Botulinum toxins): These relax facial muscles, reducing dynamic  wrinkles and preventing new ones.

Surgical Options:

  • Facelift: A surgical procedure that lifts and tightens facial skin, addressing wrinkles and sagging.
  • Brow Lift: Corrects sagging eyebrows and forehead wrinkles.
  • Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): Removes excess skin and fat around the eyes.
  • Neck Lift: Focuses on tightening loose neck skin.

Skincare and Lifestyle Changes:

  • Sun Protection: Using sunscreen and protective clothing reduce the risk of UV damage.
  • Healthy Diet: Nutrient-rich foods help support skin health.
  • Hydration: Proper hydration maintains skin elasticity.
  • Exercise: Regular physical activity benefits skin tone and texture.
  • Retinoids: Topical products containing retinoids stimulate collagen production.

Prior to commencing any of the above approaches a consultation with a healthcare professional is always recommended in order to determine the best treatments that are suitable to your requirments and expectations.
